A Fistful of Sunshine

I'm an English teacher with music in my soul, comics in my blood, festivals in my head, and social justice on my mind. I believe that education and civil disobedience have the power to change the world.

So, look out.

One week, two max, of Chase and Citi bank specific junk mail. And this has been going on at this rate for at least a year. Can’t wait to send these back with #occupy messages in them.

Don’t forget the cardboard for rigidity!

The cardboard makes it more expensive to ship due to its rigidity, and provides a wonderful canvas for a mini protest sign to drive the point home.

Happy Black Friday, everybody!

Call the White House at 202-456-1111, and read this to them.

I am truly disappointed in Barack Obama for turning a blind eye to the abuses perpetrated by Mike Bloomberg and his storm troopers, the NYPD. Mr. President, you ran under a banner of hope and change for a bright future of this nation. You both passively and actively allowed yourself to be hoisted up as a symbolic fulfillment of the dream held by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. With this in mind, how can you allow the Bill of Rights to be trampled upon under your watch?

As a citizen who was proud to have voted for you, I am appalled by your lack of response in support of Occupy Wallstreet. Under your watch, you have allowed the rights of US Citizens to be suspended through your cowardly decision to leave the so called enforcement of law up to local politicians and their big business overlords. Last week, the personal property of private citizens was stolen at Liberty Plaza, and we saw undue violence against peaceful student protestors at UC Davis. Now there are reports that under the Orwellian Patriot Act, the media is being censored from reporting the truth in regards to many of these abuses. How can you sit idly by as the tactics used against the protestors for Civil Rights over 50 years ago resurface in new and insidious ways?

Now is the time, Mr. President, for you to wake up and do your job regarding this matter; condemn the actions of politicians, corporations, and law enforcement throughout the country, and definitively state that you and your office will not tolerate the abuse of our Constitution through raids on Citizens, theft of personal property, violence as a response to peace, and the censorship of media by politicians and corporations. Your current inaction is a shameful embarrassment to yourself, your family, those who suffered or died for your right to hold the office you do, the citizens who placed their trust in you during the last election, and the Constitution which explicitly outlines these rights as inalienable.

Act now.

Sincerely,

One Autonomous Voice of Many

California university launches inquiry into pepper spray of protesters - CNN.com →

Finally seeing some mainstream coverage of this. How is pepper spraying peaceful STUDENTS any different from turning fire hoses on protestors 50 years ago? Where is the goddamned progress?

You say you want a revolution, but responsibility and finances prevent you from Occupying?

If you’ve been following my feed, you know that this movement is important to both my wife and I. We have spent a considerable amount of time getting directly involved in various ways. However, I am a teacher, and she works two jobs to make ends meet. We have not been able to stay Occupy daily, but we have realized there there is a ton we can do.

From my experience, I can tell you that it is people like you and I that are the soul of OWS. The sentiment among Occupiers is that they know that there are people who cannot get there because they are trapped in the mire of financial responsibility imposed by our current system.

This does not means that you can’t do anything, though. There plenty of ways you can get involved without adding to your pile of responsibility:

First, you could donate at occupywallst.org Money is best, but you can also send supplies; any kind of first aid or medical supplies are in high demand since Bloomberg stole the private property of US Citizens this week.

Second, call your senate and house representatives to let them know that as a constituent you support OWS, and would like them to show that same support by working to repeal Citizens United and amending the Constitution to ensure that protection under the 1st Amendment is granted only and fully to individual citizens and not businesses or corporations. You can get their contact info here: http://whoismyrepresentative.com/

Third, contact the President’s office and let them know that as a citizen, you are appalled that Obama is not intervening to defend the Bill of Rights. He is sitting idly by and letting state and local government decide when people’s freedom of speech should be protected. You can do that by calling 202-456-1111.

Fourth, you can call King Bloomberg to express your frustration. Not only is he currently reigning in an illegal third term, but he has allowed JP Morgan to recently donate 4.6 million to the NYPD, has hidden behind the veil of the Patriot Act in not allowing the freedom of the press to be upheld by restricting news from reporting on injured protestors but granting full reporting rights for the rare instance when NYPD is injured, has literally stolen the personal possessions of private citizens this week when Liberty Square was raided, ordered his storm troopers to ignore court orders, has in no way admonished the actions of violent officers against peaceful protestors, and has basically wiped his .00001% ass with the Constitution. From NY, you call 311, from outside of NY call 212-NEW-YORK.

Finally, and most importantly, express your feelings and concerns whenever you can in a positive and educational manner. The more people you talk to, and explain the real issues to, the deeper this concept gets ingrained in the American sub conscious. In the two months since the occupation began, the national dialogue has shifted dramatically. That can only happen when people like us are talking about it to those who are less informed.

A pill to make you numb. A pill to make you dumb. A pill to make you anybody else. But all the drugs in this world, won’t save her from herself.

One of my students used this line from Marilyn Manson’s “Coma White” to back up opinions on institutional drugs in the US. Now, I am listening to Mechanical Animals again for the first time in a good decade. Teaching is a hard job, but it’s the little moments like this when a kid’s personality shines so brightly in their writing that is affects a change in my own self that makes everything worth it.

Tip for teachers.

Every time you need to make a call home to inform a parent about their child’s negative behavior, also find another student to call home to tell their parent about something great they did. It’s a great way to keep up a good rapport with the kids and the parents. Plus, it’s a great way to get rid of that awful feeling of having to make those negative calls. I personally make one of these good calls per week.

Anger over proposed new austerity measures boiled over in Greece on Wednesday as unions shut down the country with what one newspaper called “the mother of all strikes.”

Flights were grounded, and state offices and shops were shuttered on the first day of a 48-hour general strike, the biggest organized protest against austerity since the debt crisis began almost two years ago.
In a remarkable display of political expression, tens of thousands of striking workers marched through the avenues of central Athens, chanting anti-capitalist and anti-government slogans. They gathered before Parliament, where lawmakers were debating a controversial austerity bill that would raise taxes and cut public sector pay and pensions, among other things, ahead of a vote Thursday.

House Democrats Ask For Support of Occupy Wall Street →

cultureofresistance:

Chris Scully, my DGR MA friend’s brother, said it best:

Dear Democrats in Congress,

You wish this was about left vs. right. You wish you could point across the aisle and say “See, the people are with us, not you!” But before you point and lie, please kindly turn that finger on yourselves, and then stick it up your asses. You are half of a bought congress. You are the other side of a counterfeit coin. You are half of the problem. You have pretended to speak for the voices of people who have a shred of goodwill for the world for too long. You have lost your privilege to be that voice. You are completely incapable of bringing about the drastic and profound changes we need in this country. You have failed. And don’t you dare try to associate your actions and trajectory with the intentions of a revolutionary society that is rejecting you. Your endorsement of a movement trying to oust you is pathetic at best. Please resign and play sudoku and solitaire on your own time. In short - fuck off.
